Under the Fijian Sun: One Couple's Search for an Inclusive Paradise.
Marion and Karyna in Fiji 🌴
The dream is universal: powdery white sand, water in fifty shades of blue, and the promise of ultimate relaxation. But for us, as a same-sex couple, that dream always starts with a silent, cautious question: "Is it really safe for us?"
When we decided to trade our life in Australia for a two-week Fijian adventure, that question was louder than the call of the waves. We’d heard things—that Fiji was friendly, but culturally reserved. We packed our bags, and a healthy dose of caution, and embarked on a journey that would surprise and delight us at every turn.
What we found wasn’t just tolerance; it was a warmth that allowed us to truly exhale. This is our story of discovering that Fiji’s famous "Bula Spirit" includes everyone.
We recently launched a company, Buddy on Board (Bob) to support people living abroad after moving from France to Australia for work. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by expats—especially those in the LGBTQ+ community—our platform provides psychological support and coaching to reduce cultural stress, ensure safer experiences, and foster a sense of belonging anywhere in the world.
From Caution to Confidence: Our First Steps in Fiji
Let's be honest: our guard was up. This initial wariness isn't a lack of adventure; for us, it's a survival mechanism honed by experience. As a same-sex couple, the script of arrival in a new country is often pre-written with caution. At the airport, we instinctively edited our interactions, presenting as "a family" to avoid any unnecessary scrutiny. In the taxi that first night, riding through the unfamiliar darkness, our senses were on high alert, reading the driver's tone, the route, the unspoken atmosphere. To be clear, this guardedness wasn't born from any specific fear of Fiji, but from the universal calculus LGBTQ+ travelers learn to make: assessing when and where it's safe to be fully ourselves.
But Fiji quickly began to put us at ease. The shift started when we left the main island behind and sailed into the breathtaking Yasawa Islands. The air felt different—lighter. The smiles were genuine. The famous Fijian warmth wasn't just a slogan; it was palpable.
We split our time between a cultural homestay, Safe Landing Resort, and the stunning Oarsman's Bay Lodge. And it was at Oarsman's that our vacation truly began. "We saw another gay couple laughing, completely at ease. In that moment, our own guard came down. This was a safe space."
The Resort That Made All the Difference: Finding Our Sanctuary
This is the most important advice we can give: where you stay defines your experience.
Oarsman's Bay Lodge wasn't just a place to sleep; it was a sanctuary. The staff didn't just tolerate us; they celebrated us in the most powerful way possible: by treating us exactly like every other couple. There was no awkwardness, no double-takes, no being called "friends" as a default.
We went from sharing a room with a "do not disturb" sign on our relationship to sharing a sunset cocktail, hand-in-hand, without a second thought. The freedom to be ourselves was the ultimate luxury.
What made it so inclusive?
Effortless Inclusivity: From check-in ("We have your queen bed ready") to dinner ("A table for you and your partner"), the language was naturally inclusive.
A Welcoming Vibe: The resort attracted a diverse mix of open-minded travelers, creating a relaxed and accepting atmosphere.
Safety to Unwind: We never once felt the need to scan a room or modify our behavior. We could just be.
Beyond the Resort: Culture, Safety, and the 9/10 Rating
So, how did we fare outside the resort bubble? Exceptionally well.
Fiji has a strong Christian and cultural heritage, which we respected by dressing modestly in villages and being mindful of local customs. This respect was met with nothing but kindness. We explored, we learned, and we felt safe.
On a scale of 1-10, we rate our feeling of safety a 9. The single point deduction was for a sketchy taxi ride upon arrival—a universal travel worry, not an LGBTQ+-specific one. Once we were in the Yasawas, that number was a solid 10.
The Verdict: Our Fijian Love Story
Our Fijian escape evolved from a simple holiday into a journey of the heart, a beautiful reaffirmation of what matters most. If we were to pinpoint its essence, it wouldn't be a single activity or vista, but a gentle, pervasive atmosphere that embraced us from the start: the feeling of unconditional welcome.
We ventured to these islands with a hopeful question, and we departed carrying a treasure—a core memory of golden hour at Oarsman's. As we watched the sun dip below the lagoon, surrounded by the authentic warmth of the people, we experienced a rare and precious freedom: the freedom to be completely and openly ourselves. This, we realized, is the authentic magic of Fiji.
